GTI VR6 Starter Replacement

Replacing the starter on a VR6 is relatively simple.

Tools and Parts required:

  • 17,16,13,10mm sockets
  • Long socket extension
  • 6mm allen driver
  • 5mm allen driver
  • Jack
  • New starter
StepDescriptionPhoto
1. Open the hood. Use a 10mm socket to unbolt the battery connections (black ground first). Use a 13mm socket to unbolt battery mount. Remove battery. Use an allen driver to remove the bolt holding the power steering reservoir to the battery tray.
2. Unbolt the four 10mm bolts holding the battery tray in place. Remove battery tray. Move power steering reservoir out of the way. These two steps will give us the room we need to do the work.
3. You must support the engine before removing the starter. Use an engine support bridge or use a floor jack to support the weight of the engine. (This is required -- the top starter bolt goes through the engine mount).
4. Unclip the connector on the starter (red arrow). Use a 13mm socket to unbolt the starter terminal nut (yellow arrow).
5. Go underneath the car. The top bolt of the starter also holds a bracket with a wiring harness on it. We need to remove the 13mm bolt for this wiring harness first. Get a long 13mm socket with a long extension (or two extensions). Find the 13mm socket from underneath (yellow arrow).
6. A second picture of the "hidden" 13mm nut with the wiring harness in view. Socket and extension on the nut (yellow arrow).
7. Move the wiring harness out of the way. You should see the 16mm bolt holding the top of the starter in.
8. Again using a socket extension, unbolt the top 16mm bolt.
9. Underneath the car is the second 16mm bolt holding the starter on the transmission. There is a bracket for the power steering line in the way -- you way want to move it out of the way (it's held in place with a 17mm bolt through the transmission). Unbolt the bottom 16mm starter bolt.
10. Starter removed.
11. Install new starter. Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque starter mounting bolts to 47Nm (44 ft-lb) Reinstall wiring harness 13mm bolt. Reattach wires to starter. Reinstall battery tray, reinstall battery. Done!
