GTI VR6 Serpentine Belt Replacement

The VR6 has a single accessory "serpentine" belt that drives the water pump, power steering, alternator and A/C. The belt wears and cracks and needs to be replaced as part of regular maintenance.

Tools and Parts required:

  • 7mm, 13mm sockets
  • Phillips Screwdriver
  • M8-1.25-80 bolt
  • New serpentine belt
StepDescriptionPhoto
1. Locate the airbox (passenger side of car). Use the phillips screwdriver to unscrew the hose clamp indicated by the yellow arrow. Gently pull the hose off. Unplug the wire connector from the MAF (mass airflow sensor) indicated by the green arrow.
2. Unclasp the MAF from the airbox. Use your fingers to unhook the two clamps pointed at by the blue arrows.
3. Unclasp the top of the airbox. Use your fingers to unhook the two clamps pointed at by the red arrows. You should now be able to wiggle the MAF out of the airbox. Wiggle the top of the airbox off and separate from the bottom.
4. Remove the lower half of the airbox. There are two rubber bands holding the airbox down. Find the rubber bands pointed to by the red arrows and remove. Lift lower half of airbox out.
5. Locate the serpentine belt tensioner. Use a M8-80 (8mm by 80mm long) hex bolt to remove tension. Thread bolt into hole at green arrow. Tighten until tension is released. Don't overtighten.
6. Jack up the passenger side of the car a bit. Always use jack stands for safety.
7. Use a 7mm socket to remove the two bolts holding the trim piece inside the wheel well.
8. Remove the two phillips screws from under the front bumper lip to get the trim piece off.
9. There is a plastic trim piece covering the serpentine belt from underneath. It is held on by two metal tension clips (shown in picture). Use a screwdriver to pry these off.
10. You should now be looking at the serpentine belt and power steering pump.
11. Remove serpentine belt.
12. Install new serpentine belt. It's easiest to slide the belt between the two center pulleys, over the crankshaft pulley, over the tensioner and alternator pulleys and then finally slip it over the bottom power steering pulley.
13. Be sure to check the belt routing. Be certain that the belt is properly aligned and in the groves on all the pulleys. Crank, but don't start, the car to turn the belt. Reinspect that the belt is on properly before continuing.
14. Remove tension from the tensioner. Reinstall plastic trim pieces. Reinstall airbox. Lower car. Done!
