An oil change is an incredibly quick and easy maintenance item
that should be performed at least every 5,000 miles on the GTI
VR6. Anyone can change the oil.
| Step | Description | Photo
|---|
| 1.
| Open the hood. Twist the oil cap off of the engine
| 2.
| Jack up the driver's side of the car. Be sure to use
jack stands to support the car in addition to the jack.
| 3.
| Place a pan large enough to hold 5qts of oil underneath
the oil pan.
| 4.
| Locate the 19mm bolt on the oil pan. Loosen this bolt.
The oil will drain out into the pan you placed underneath
the car in the previous step
| 5.
| Locate the oil filter housing that's underneath the car.
| 6.
| Open the drain plug in the filter housing using the 6mm
allen wrench. Let the oil drain into the oil pan.
| 7.
| Once the oil has drained from both the oil pan and the
oil filter housing, use the 36mm socket to take the oil
filter housing off.
| 8.
| Remove the old oil filter from the housing. Place the
new oil filter into the housing. It should snap into
place by hand.
| 9.
| Take the old o-ring off of the filter housing. Use some
of the old oil to coat the new o-ring (that came with the
new oil filter) with oil. Place it on the housing in the
groove where the old o-ring came off.
| 10.
| Thread the oil housing with the new oil filter into place.
Torque to 22 ft-lbs. Reinstall the filter housing drain
plug using the allen wrench to 7.4 ft-lbs (hand tight).
Reinstall the oil pan drain plug with the copper washer
to 22 ft-lbs.
| 11.
| Pour new oil into the engine where the oil cap was removed.
After 4 quarts, check the oil level using the dip-stick.
The oil level should be in the groved area; some engines
require 5 quarts.
